![]() Like the big numbers on those are for max sequential throughput, and you might not touch that with the stuff you're doing, which is why it'd be good to buy some drives to test out now.Īnd on enclosures again, for soft vs hard RAID I think most let you configure the bays however you want. One thing I'm really not sure about is the effect of the limit of SATA 6Gbps or TB1/2 on the performance of the type of stuff you're doing. I'd suggest the Samsung 840 Pro (cause better performance and write endurance) but it seems to max out at 512GB, while the 840 Evo can be had at 768GB at the same price (~$430), and 1TB for $100 more, at least on Amazon. Anandtech did some tests showing the performance impact here: Some other odds and ends, assuming the drives are going to see a lot of abuse, you might want to consider going with big ass ones and overprovisioning (leaving a bunch of unformatted space).and if you really need a full 1TB volume I guess you wouldn't have a choice but to go with 2 drives if you wanted to leave ample free space. And with a RAID there's block size stuff that's above my head, but basically different sizes are ideal for different workloads. ![]() Worst case you decide you don't need the stripe and you can use it as another backup/extra drive of some sort, maybe play with mirroring if you want live redundancy.and in theory you can get better read speed from a mirror than a stripe, so depending on the nature of the DB you might want to check that out too. When you get the new machine you can swap them into whatever enclosure you end up getting and further test out single and striped speed. You won't see the full benefit cause those old MPs are limited to 3Gbps SATA, but if the limiting factor is smaller transactions you should theoretically still see a big boost. Ok, I asked about your current machine cause if possible you might want to try just buying 2 SSDs to test out on your current setup, like swap your system/program and DB drives out and test them out.
